Hale Mahaolu - Home of Pleasant Living

Elderly Housing

Residents’ share of rent at Hale Mahaolu housing sites is usually based on 30% of adjusted gross income.

The housing sites for the elderly and disabled consist of primarily single story apartments with sufficient yard space for gardening. Our elderly residents enjoy the same amenities as in our family housing sites, along with additional benefits aimed at enhancing the “golden years.” Audio/visual buzzers connect each apartment to a Neighbor Alert system.

Hale Mahaolu understands the needs of the elderly to maintain an active lifestyle. A variety of recreational activities are available at each elderly housing site provided by agencies such as the County of Maui’s Senior Services Division, the Department of Education’s Adult Education Division, and various community groups. These activities include hula, Japanese and Okinawan dancing, karaoke, karate, oil painting, crafts, flower arrangement, bridge, ukulele, mahjongg, and exercise. The residents’ associations organize on and off-island excursions, parties, Community Work Day clean-ups, and other meaningful activities such as participation in the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), Hale Lima Akau Volunteer Center, Alu Like, Inc., and support for other human service groups.

At our elderly housing sites, transportation services are provided by Maui Economic Opportunity (MEO) for shopping and other errands. MEO and Kaunoa Senior Escort program also provide our residents with individually scheduled transportation to doctor appointments and other important engagements.

MEO provides free or minimal cost housekeeping and laundry services to eligible residents of Hale Mahaolu. Our Congregate Housing Services Program (CHSP) conducts a mini case management service to arrange for our residents’ housekeeping, transportation, legal, and other needs.

Hale Mahaolu’s Personal Care Program offers in-home assistance to frail and elderly or disabled persons who are unable to perform activities of daily living by themselves. The program helps in locating and paying for Personal Care Attendants who assist the client with such daily activities as bathing, grooming, meals, etc. These services are not restricted to Hale Mahaolu residents and are available island wide on Maui, Molokai, and Lanai. At Akahi and Elua, Hale Mahaolu’s CHSP can also arrange for in-home personal care services.
