Personal Care Program
Hale Mahaolu Personal Care Program has been serving Maui County’s frail elderly and disabled and/or chronically ill adults since 1985. The goal of our program is to assist these individuals in maintaining an independent lifestyle in their own home and prevent premature or unnecessary institutionalization.
Personal care services are available to clients 18 years of age and older who have been assessed with a chronic or acute condition that impairs the person’s ability to maintain an independent lifestyle. Clients may qualify for subsidies if they are within the income brackets specified on the sliding fee scale and are not receiving duplicate services from another personal care agency. Clients referred through Nursing Home Without Walls may pay a cost share determined by Nursing Home Without Walls. Clients 60 years of age and older may receive subsidized personal care services through the State of Hawaii Kupuna Care Program.
The Program maintains a registry of qualified personal care attendants (PCAs) who are available as self‑employed independent contractors to our clients. PCAs provide personal care services that may include bathing, grooming, personal hygiene, toileting, transfers, meal preparation and feeding, assistance with exercise and/or ambulation, and limited assistance with medications, wound care, and/or respiratory care. PCAs may also provide light housekeeping such as cleaning the bathroom after bathing client, cleaning of utensils following meal service, bedding changes, etc., and/or transportation or escort service when no other resource is available.
