History
In the mid-1960's, the Mayor and the Maui County Council allocated seed monies for the first elderly housing project on Maui, Hale Mahaolu Akahi. Alexander and Baldwin generously donated the project site in Kahului. The UPW (Maui division), ILWU (Maui division), Maui Association of Hongwanji Missions, Maui Retired Teachers Association, Maui Council of Holy Name Societies, Hale Makua, and the United Church of Christ also pledged their support and resources and have helped build Hale Mahaolu into what it is today. The Board of Directors has grown to fifteen members, drawing upon other Maui County residents who donate their time and talents to fill eight “at-large” Director seats.
